Is LED much more energy efficient than other types of lighting?
It is becoming the most efficient light source available to us, although at this moment there are more efficient ones, namely certain metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps.
Do LED products have a longer life?
Yes, good quality ones do. Our LED products have a typical lifecycle of 50,000 hours, which equates to around 20 years of use within standard working hours of 2500 per annum. However, there are certain T5 fluorescent tubes and metal halide lamps rated at 60,000 hours. Also, some induction lamps have a rated life of 100,000 hours.
Is LED a new technology?
Light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been around for decades, however there have been huge steps forward in the technology in recent years. Modern LEDs now offer a high level of efficacy that is comparable with the more traditional lighting technologies like fluorescents. LED development is set to improve even further, as companies (like ourselves) continue to innovate and experiment with its potential.
Why are LED lights said to be safer?
LEDs run at lower temperatures than many other light sources, they are solid state which means they have less moving parts and are robust against potential damage. Our products are designed and manufactured in accordance with EN60598 and electrical safety directives.
What is the LED equivalent of say a 100W incandescent lamp?
Around 12W LED would have a similar lumen output.
How do Hilclare’s LED lights measure up to the competition?
We use the finest LED engines together with innovative luminaire design and skilled manufacture. They are also designed to be safe in use.
Are LED luminaires much more expensive?
It depends on the luminaire, but generally LED fixtures are more expensive at the moment.
Are LEDs as bright as other light sources?
Brightness is a measure of luminance, which is usually given in terms of candelas per unit area. Because individual LEDs are very small, this can therefore lead to LEDs appearing far brighter than other sources.
Can LED lights be dimmed?
Many of our LED luminaires can be supplied with dimmable gear. They can also be linked in to advanced control systems.
Can we fit your LED products into our old light fixtures?
Yes we have certain LED lamps which are a direct retrofit.
Are there LED versions of all your products?
We are constantly developing LED versions of existing products as well as launching new products. We view our marketplace as being ever evolving and expect to have LED versions of all our product ranges in the near future.
What colour light do your LED products cast?
It depends on the correlated colour temperature of the LED engine. Many of our products are now available in at least 3000K (warm white) and 4000K (cool white) options.
Are LEDs bright enough to light up a warehouse?
Yes, using the correct luminaire for the job.
Can LED lights be used in hazardous areas?
Yes, we have luminaires suitable for Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 21 and Zone 22 use.
How do I know if my control gear and electrical systems are compatible with your LEDs?

Does the ambient temperature affect the performance of LEDs?
Yes it does, if the temperature varies from that stated in the relevant data sheet.
What IP ratings do your LED products come under?
Our LED luminaries cover IP20 through to IP68 depending on the luminaire.
We need a particular type of LED system that is not featured on the website, do you offer other products?
