Managing Emergency Lighting

Managing Emergency Lighting

Emergency lighting management is a vital safety component in public and commercial buildings. A company or organisation will normally nominate a person or team to manage emergency lighting and those tasked with this have a number of aspects to consider.

Amongst these considerations are the following basic principles:

  • Government safety standards must be adhered to and an in-depth understanding of the The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order is essential.
  • Risk assessments must be carried out to identify potential hazards, access points, escape routes and emergency equipment. The results should determine the requirements of emergency lighting and signage.
  • Specified luminaires must meet the safety requirements of current building regulations Lighting must be operational and offer the highest possible visibility in an emergency situation.
  • Detailed testing and maintenance must be carried out to ensure emergency lighting is in good working order. These inspections should be carried out periodically and recorded to minimise the risk of equipment failure.
